Document Based Questions (DBQ)



What is a DBQ:

A document based question is an assignment in which students are to analyze primary documents. Document Based Questions are great tool for Social Studies teachers. Document Based Questions are not meant to test a student's knowledge on content, but rather the student's ability to evaluate and analyze important primary sources.

What do they look like?

Document Based Questions can take many different forms. As stated above the documents are usually primary sources, such as, political cartoons, speeches, advertisements, journal entries, etc. The questions that are asked are usually open ended. This allows the students to analyze the data and see the topic in a different way. However document based questions can have binary choice (true/false), multiple choice, and essay length questions!


In the example below, the student is asked to evaluate and analyze the primary source. This particular DBQ is focused on Thomas Jefferson's presidency, or more important his Embargo Act.
